What are the Professional Standards for BC educators?

The Professional Standards for BC Educators were developed by the BC Teachers’ Council and are overseen by the Teacher Regulation Branch of the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care. These standards outline the knowledge, skills, and ethical responsibilities expected of teachers in British Columbia. They guide educators in creating safe and inclusive learning environments, using effective teaching and assessment practices, engaging in professional learning, and working collaboratively with families, colleagues, and communities. The standards also emphasize the importance of respecting and valuing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis histories, cultures, and perspectives in education. Overall, the Professional Standards support educators in maintaining high levels of professionalism and focusing on the well-being and success of all students.
My take on the standards:
To me, the BC Professional Standards are more than a checklist… they’re a guide for how I want to teach and grow as an educator. I see them as a reminder to put students first, create learning environments that are safe and inclusive, and reflect on my own practice so I can keep improving. I like that they emphasize collaboration with families and communities because teaching isn’t done in isolation. I also really value the focus on honouring Indigenous histories and perspectives, which helps me think about teaching in a way that’s respectful and socially responsible. Overall, these standards feel like a blueprint for being the kind of teacher who cares about both learning and relationships.
How does my teaching/how will my teaching connect to these:
My teaching connects to the BC Professional Standards in several ways. I prioritize student well-being and inclusion by creating activities and lessons that are engaging, safe, and accessible for all learners. I use assessment strategies like journals, games, exit slips, and self-assessments to track progress and give clear, meaningful feedback, which aligns with the standard on effective planning, instruction, and assessment. I also collaborate with students, families, and peers to support learning and build community, reflecting the standards about relationships and community involvement. Throughout my teaching, I strive to reflect on my practice and engage in professional learning, making adjustments based on what works best for my students. Finally, I incorporate Indigenous perspectives and honour local histories in my lessons, specifically the voices, ways of knowing, and ways of being of the Ktunaxa People, ensuring that learning is culturally responsive and socially responsible. By keeping these standards in mind, I aim to be a teacher who is ethical, reflective, and focused on the growth and success of every student.

Connection to the University of Victoria (UVIC) Teacher Competencies:
The Professional Standards for BC Educators and the UVic Teacher Competencies work together to guide teachers in ethical, reflective, and effective practice. Standards about caring for students, inclusivity, and respecting diverse learners connect with UVic competencies around communication, collaboration, and supporting all learners. Standards on planning, instruction, and assessment align with competencies on implementing effective teaching and linking assessment to learning. Together, they help me focus on being a thoughtful, responsible, and effective teacher in the classroom.
